Lo Scoglio- The Perfect Lunch Spot on the Amalfi Coast
Forget glitz and glamour, I want simplicity when I'm on holiday. And nowhere does it better than Lo Scoglio. This is an authentic (I use this in the truest sense of the word) family run restaurant where farm to table and sea to table are not just trendy phrases but a real life every day occurrence. 'Papa', Peppino de Simone, is responsible for the farm up in the hills and the fish is caught fresh everyday.
Founded in 1958 by the De Simone family, Lo Scoglio means "The Rock' and the restaurant is literally built on a rock, jutting out to sea. A jetty on stilts if you like, which means that most people arrive by boat. A tad different to how it might have looked in 1958, apparently there were no roads from the village down to the sea at that time, it is still run with the same philosophy that 'Nonna' started all those years ago.
It has to be one of life's real pleasures to enjoy a long lunch with the kind of atmosphere that Italians do best. Buzzy, laid back and no rushing you through the meal. Add to this, good food, wine, service and an unbeatable location looking over the sea, what more can you ask for? We feasted on caprese salad, calamari and the pasta that is local to the region Spaghetti con le zucchine alla Nerano or spaghetti with courgettes which I can highly recommend and could easily live on. Don't forget the tiramisu which really is to die for.
Of course, going back to the glitz there is always plenty to see, you only need look at the number of yachts moored in the bay. After all it is only a stone's throw from Capri but thankfully there is no VIP treatment here. Lo Scoglio is an Amalfi Coast institution and it is easy to see why.
