Following the Architects: Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens
I currently have two obsessions. One is Africa and the other is award winning architects, Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens. I was lucky enough to meet them at one of their recent projects, Angama Mara which opened in Kenya a couple of years ago and instantly fell for the design of this stunning lodge set high up on the escarpment overlooking the Mara. Not only talented architects but also lovely people. I had already realised that this duo was responsible for the exclusive North Island in the Seychelles but I was now curious to find out what other properties lay in their portfolio. Miavana, opening next month in Madagascar really captured my imagination, a luxury lodge I'm sure will have a very bright future. So many things inspire us to travel and I have every confidence that 'following the architects' will not leave any discerning traveller disappointed. Having already ticked Angama off the list, I just hope I get to see the rest of these beautiful properties for myself.
Angama Mara, Kenya
Angama Mara is a remarkable new safari lodge inspired by the Swahili word for 'suspended in mid air'. Angama Mara sits high above the stunning Maasai Mara and offers two intimate camps of just fifteen tented suites each, a private airfield and access to the Mara below. This is Out of Africa in more ways than one (the picnic scene from Hollywood film Out Of Africa was filmed here) and the luxury accommodation is matched by the genuine warmth of the staff. A very special place...
North Island, Seychelles
Some 30km from the main island of Mahé, Ile du Nord, or North Island, enjoys private isolation within the Inner Island group of the Seychelles. On this floating paradise, 11 guest villas have been built from local materials reaped from the rehabilitation process, where luxury and simplicity mingle. North Island is a place that unashamedly aims at providing the very best in privacy, location, accommodation, services, facilities and experience.
Chinzombo Safari Camp, Zambia
The camp is set within 60 acres of private land with Luangwa River frontage; the views from its riverside location which teems with wildlife, plus the private, direct access into one of the most game rich areas of the National Park all combine to make this a truly special place.Gigantic, ancient shade trees offer peace and tranquility for guests staying in any one of the six stunning villas, one of which is a family suite with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, perfect for families or small groups. Each villa has its own private pool, cooled sleeping areas, and massive bathroom.
